The Legend of the Young Santa Klaus Part I
Die Legende vom Kind Santa Klaus
In a snowbound cottage deep in the Black Forest, the young Klaus secretly hoards Christmas cookies and fears that the giants who punish naughty children are coming for him.
The story
Framed by a modern-day narrator, this whimsical origin story imagines Santa as Klaus, a ten-year-old only child raised by strict but loving German parents in a frozen forest. Klaus longs for a pet and quietly stashes stolen cookies in his stockings, while his father’s bedtime tales warn of ancient giants who take toys from bad children.
The giant’s nightly visits escalate until Klaus’s theft is discovered. He escapes up the chimney on a rope of tied stockings and meets a cautious reindeer, who is won over by cookie crumbs. Along the way the story playfully seeds the Christmas lore we know: stockings, chimneys, coal, cookies left out, toys for good children, and flying reindeer.
